I’m sorry but Amy Winehouse has no right being on this picture. I know what everyone’s saying about how she was important to a generation and how great a musician she was, but you have to honestly compare the social and global impact and degree of how these other artists shaped the music world. Let’s just go by platinum records and other musical accomplishments alone. Cobain had 3 hit albums with Nirvana with 9 hit songs and shaped a decade of music; also, not to mention that they are one of the best-selling bands/artists of all time. Jim had 9 The Doors albums and 21 hit singles, and that was just with The Doors… not to mention 7 of the 9 went platinum or multi-platinum albums; oh also, hundreds of thousands make a pilgrimage to Paris every year to honor Jim at his final resting place. Janis, the only other female, had 3 albums, numerous hit songs and not to mention being ranked 26th in the greatest singers of all time by Rolling Stone. Jimi, what more do I need to say? He’s motherfuckin’ Jimi Hendrix! While alive he has 4 albums, and he was so freakin awesome, he made 11 more after he died! He had 12 hit singles. All his albums he made when he was alive went platinum. Oh also, not to mention, he also revolutionized the way people play the electric guitar… left handed (just like Kurt). Brian Jones made 11 albums with the Stones with 34 hit singles and had 3 platinum albums. Oh, he also formed one of the greatest bands of all time… who still perform to this very day!
And let’s see what Amy had done… She had 2 albums, one which most people haven’t heard of… so basically 1 album. She also had 6 singles, with only 1 hit song which only gained additional popularity. Sure, the album went multi-platnium, but this is in a era where music is more accessible and where pretty much any pop album that’s played on the radio goes platinum. One can even say that she was pretty much a one hit wonder. Can you think of any other song that she sang that became popular? Unlike Kurt, she didn’t really change the face of music for a generation. Unlike Jim, I doubt people will make pilgrimages from around the world to the UK to visit her grave. Unlike Janice she won’t be ranked in the top 50 greatest artists of all time. Unlike Jimi she didn’t revolutionize her instrument. Unlike Brian, she didn’t form one the of the greatest bands of all time.
Granted, she was a good signer, a great act and person to follow in the tabloids, but if you look what she accomplished in the musical world, what she did for our generation, she honestly hasn’t done much. Sure she was a big name in music and she did win a few Grammys for one album and one song, but other than that, nothing. Wearing shirts for her won’t be a fashion trend and I can honestly say that I think people will forget about her within a few years, while these others are cultural icons and music gods. I think the only time people will remember her is if her song plays on the radio, if you’re playing Rock Band, or if she’s the answer for some sort of trivia game.
I’m sorry Amy that you’re gone, but you really should have said “Yes, yes, yes” to rehab instead of writing a song about not wanting help.
