With the explosion of posts regarding the Killers first single off their new album, “Day & Age,” and since I’m going to see them in concert again next week, I’ve decided to research what the song, “Human,” is actually about…
Now the first thing I ran into was the debate about if the lyrics were… “Are we Human? Or are we DANCER?” or is it “Are we Human? Or are we DENSER?” Now the second lyric would make the song pretty deep and give it a whole different meaning, but being the Killers, the first lyrics would be more true to their style. And in fact, it is “Dancer” in the singular. Does that urk anyone else? Apparently, the lyric was taken from a quote from Hunter S. Thompson: “We’re raising a generation of dancers.” Now does this “dancer” have a secondary meaning like shallow glamorous movie stars? Children performers? Or just people who know how to dance? Well, researching Flowers’ interviews, he declined to talk about the deeper connotations of his lyrics. But in true Killer’s fashion, I don’t think there is any super deep meaning to the chorus.
As for the rest of the song, one could say that it’s about independence, taking chances, opportunity, or even freedom. “Close your eyes, Clear your heart, And cut the cord.” If you break it down, the lyrics from verse to verse don’t really connect, but it’s almost like it’s a progression of someone taking the stage before a performance, but then it breaks into something totally random. I’m confused.
So all-in-all, I think the Killer just wrote a traditional Killer song. Something fun and upbeat with some 80’s psudo-synth pop. Like a lot of their songs, it’s about the chorus and the hook, which isn’t bad if you’re trying to create this type of song. The song isn’t meant to be deep in anyway, and I think most Killers fans know it. I guess I shouldn’t have expected so much from them to write a lyrically deep song, because that’s not really who they are. Unless… the song is sooooo deep that it’s way above everyone’s heads. So, I guess just go out there and become dancer. I can’t wait to see them again next week. I’ll be human… and dancer!
